This dark tiled and underused garden in the heart of Battersea needed an upgrade.

This courtyard garden in the heart of Battersea, London was in need of lightnening up. The previous dark tiles left the North/East facing garden feeling even darker. We stripped the garden back, re-rendered a 100+ year old crumbling wall and lightened the space with light porcelain tiles and key lighting in amongst the plants.

Project description

Tucked away in the heart of Battersea, London, this compact courtyard garden had fallen into disuse, burdened by heavy, dark tiling that exacerbated the challenges of its north-east orientation. With limited direct sunlight reaching the space, the existing finishes absorbed what little ambient light remained, leaving the area feeling cold, enclosed, and uninviting. The brief was clear: strip away the gloom and reimagine the courtyard as a luminous, welcoming retreat that felt like an organic extension of the home.

The transformation began with essential structural restoration. At the core of the perimeter stood a 100-plus-year-old boundary wall, weathered and crumbling after decades of London rain. Rather than concealing the damage, we stripped the space back to its foundations and meticulously re-rendered the brickwork, delivering a clean, modern finish while safeguarding the integrity of this historic feature.

To counteract the aspect and bring warmth into the space, we laid large-format, light-toned porcelain tiles across the terrace. The reflective surface instantly bounces natural daylight throughout the courtyard, creating the illusion of a significantly larger footprint. The design was completed with layered, discreet architectural lighting nestled within tailored planting pockets, casting soft uplight against the foliage and re-rendered walls. By day, it serves as a serene, sunlit sanctuary; by night, an atmospheric, beautifully illuminated entertaining area suited for year-round urban living.
